Description
Copper peptide GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine. The tripeptide has
strong affinity for copper(II) and was first isolated from human plasma. It can be found also in saliva and urine.

Overview
In human plasma, the level of GHK-Cu is about 200ng/ml at age 200. By the age of 60, the level drops to 80ng/ml. In humans, GHK-Cu is proposed to promote wound healing, attraction of immune cells, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, stimulation of collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis in skin fibroblasts and promotion of blood vessels growth. Synthetic GHK-Cu is used in cosmetics as a reparative and anti-aging ingredient.
History of GHK-Cu
Loren Pickart separated the copper peptide GHK-Cu from human plasma albumin in 1973. It was noticed that liver tissue obtained from patients aged 60 to 80 years had an increased level of fibrinogen. However, when liver cells from old patients were incubated in the blood from the younger group, the older cells started functioning in nearly the same way as the younger group liver tissue. It turned out that this effect is similar with GHK. He thought that this activity in human plasma albumin was a tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and that it might function by chelating metal ions.
Therefore, In 1977, GHK-Cu modulates copper intake into cells. Untill today, it is used in cosmetics and dietary supplement.
What is copper peptide good for?
Copper peptides may potentially reduce fine lines, wrinkle, and sagging skin by promoting collagen and elastin production. Copper peptides also promote the production of glycosaminoglycans, including hyaluronic acid, which helps moisturize and hydrate the skin barrier.
Copper is also an anti-inflammatory that speeds up wound healing, meaning it's great for treating scarring, pigmentation, and redness caused by inflammation.
Are copper peptides bettter than vitamin C?
Two raw materials have their own effects, copper peptides is more suitable for sensitive and reactive skin in comparison to vitamin C. While Vitamin C is one of skincare's biggest hitters and a ubiquitous active in most serums and creams.
"It's difficult to make a comparison as scientfic data shows both vitamin C and copper have antioxidant benefits," says Dr Mansouri. Where copper peptides perhaps have an advantage is that they mop up free radicals but are still well-tolerated and can be conveniently integrated into your current skin regimen without causing issues or interactions."
What is the disadvantage of copper peptide?
While being gentler than retinoids, excessive use of Copper Peptides should be avoided as it may result in free radical damage and collagen breakdown. It's essential to highlight that this ingredient might also be a nightmare when pairing directly with strong antioxidants, acids and retinoids.
Why can't you use copper peptides with vitamin C?
You can, but with caution. This is mainly because when copper and vitamin C layered together can sometimes cancel each other's effects on the skin. You'll find with different strengths of potency of copper will result in ascorbic acid(also known as vitamin C) becoming oxidised.
Can we use Niacinamide with copper peptides?
"Niacinamide is another great ingredient that copper peptides pair well with as it helps to minimize redness and brighten skin, all which help improve skin's overall tone and appearance.
Do copper peptides cause hair growth?
Copper peptides not only play a significant role in regenerating new hair growth, but they can also make your existing hair look and feel thicker by increasing the follicle size. The hair will have a thicker and fuller appearance. As referenced, this molecule has anti-inflammatory properties.
